Baghdad bomb was an attempt to kill me, says Iraq's prime minister

Iraq's prime minister has said a bombing inside Baghdad's heavily fortified Green Zone earlier this week was an assassination attempt.

Nouri al-Maliki said that initial intelligence on the bomb that exploded opposite the parliament buildings on Monday suggested he was the target.

But he denied that the explosion signalled a deterioration in security in the area, which is meant to be one of the most secure in Iraq.

"The preliminary intelligence information says that the car was due to enter parliament and stay there and not to explode. It was supposed to explode on the day I entered parliament," he told the Associated Press.

The Baghdad military spokesman, Qassim al-Moussawi, confirmed that Maliki was the target.

He said the driver of the vehicle tried to join a convoy going into the parliament grounds but was turned back by officials at the checkpoint because he lacked proper identification.

The driver then drove to a parking area opposite the parliament entrance, and the vehicle exploded seconds later.

Maliki said the bomb was probably assembled inside the Green Zone and was not very powerful.

Authorities are still trying to identify a body found near the wrecked car to determine whether he was the bomber or a bystander. Two other people were wounded in the blast.

Maliki played down suggestions that the attack, in a compound that also contains other Iraqi government institutions and the US Embassy, was a sign that Iraqi forces would be unable to handle security after US forces withdraw this month.

"I don't think that this says something about the security situation in the country," the prime minister said.

"Such breaches can happen in any country or anywhere. It was a very simple operation. I cannot see in this operation any indication of a security deterioration in Iraq."

He blamed al-Qaida in Iraq and Saddam Hussein's Ba'ath party for the violence.

"They are opposing me, the parliament speaker and the parliament and the whole political process, so whomever the victim of their operation will be, it is a victory for them," he said.

Maliki said he had previously told the speaker, Osama al-Nujaifi, that there might be an attempt to kill one of them at the parliament and advised him to exercise caution.

Maliki said Iraqi security forces were still looking for at least four people believed to have played a role in the plot.

Church of England pours cold water on hopes for civil partnership ceremonies

The Church of England has announced that it will not allow civil partnership ceremonies to take place in its churches unless the full General Synod gives its consent.

A law enabling same-sex couples to register their partnerships in places of worship, removing a key legal distinction between the ceremony and marriage, comes into force on Monday.

But in a letter to the synod, secretary general William Fittall said no Church of England religious premises could host the registration of partnerships without written permission from the national assembly.

Peter Tatchell, the gay rights campaigner, called the move an "infringement of religious freedom" and criticised the government for failing to force religious groups to host the ceremonies.

But the church's legal office said its regulations do not constitute unlawful discrimination under the Equality Act as marriage and civil partnerships are different services and legally distinct concepts.

It said in a statement: "A gentlemen's outfitter is not required to supply women's clothes. A children's bookshop is not required to stock books that are intended for adults.

"And a church that provides a facility to marry is not required to provide a facility to same-sex couples for registering civil partnerships."

Netanyahu spokesman: Palestinians to blame for deadlock

A spokesman for Israel's prime minister has said the Palestinian leadership is to blame for the deadlock in peace talks, a day after the US defence secretary asserted that Israel was not doing enough to renew negotiations.

Mark Regev, a spokesman for Binyamin Netanyahu, said Israel remains ready for the resumption of peace talks without preconditions. The Palestinians, he said, are "playing diplomatic games to try to cover their position, which is to boycott Israel and to refuse to enter negotiations".

In a speech at a Brookings Institution forum in Washington on Friday, US defence secretary Leon Panetta urged Israel to "reach out and mend fences" with Turkey, Egypt and other security partners in the Middle East, saying he was troubled by the Jewish state's growing isolation in the volatile region.

Panetta said that while Israel is not solely responsible for its isolation, it could more actively attempt to reverse the trend.

"For example, Israel can reach out and mend fences with those who share an interest in regional stability countries like Turkey and Egypt, as well as Jordan," he said.

"This is not impossible. If the gestures are rebuked, the world will see those rebukes for what they are. And that is exactly why Israel should pursue them."

He also pressed Israeli leaders to do more to restart peace talks with the Palestinians – saying "Just get to the damned table" – and underscored Barack Obama's determination to stop Iran from acquiring nuclear weapons.

He called Iran "a very grave threat to all of us" and said any Iranian disruption of the free flow of commerce through the Persian Gulf is a "red line" for the US.

Panetta, 73, who made his first visit to Israel as Pentagon chief in October, said it is in the interests of Israel as well as Turkey, a Nato ally of the US, to reconcile. He said he would take that message to Ankara when he visits there in two weeks.

He urged the Israelis to address their concerns about Egypt's political revolution through increased communication and co-operation with Egyptian authorities, "not by stepping away from them".

Addressing an issue that is in the primary domain of secretary of state Hillary Clinton, Panetta urged Israel to "lean forward" to achieve peace with the Palestinians. Peace talks have been moribund for more than a year.

"Rather than undermining the Palestinian Authority, it is in Israel's interests to strengthen it by … continuing to transfer Palestinian tax revenues and pursuing other avenues of co-operation," he said.

Panetta spoke starkly of the challenge of Iran's nuclear ambitions.

"No greater threat exists to the security and prosperity of the Middle East than a nuclear-armed Iran," he said, adding that Obama has not ruled out using military force to stop Iran from going nuclear.

In a question-and-answer session with his audience after his speech, Panetta laid out in detail his thinking on the arguments against an Israeli or US military attack on Iran's nuclear facilities.

He said such an attack would "at best" delay Iran's nuclear programme by one or two years. Among the unintended consequences, he said, would be an increase in regional support for Iran and the likelihood of Iranian retaliation against US forces and bases in the Middle East. It also would have harmful economic consequences and could lead to military escalation, he said.

Egyptian election results 'disturbing' says Israel's defence minster

Israel's defence minister, Ehud Barak, has said that initial results from Egypt's parliamentary elections are "very, very disturbing".

Few official results have been released from the first round vote, but leaked counts point to a clear majority for Islamist parties led by the Muslim Brotherhood.

Barak said he hopes Egypt's first parliament to be seated after the ousting of Hosni Mubarak will respect international treaties, including its shaky 1979 peace treaty with Israel.

Israel's main fear is the Muslim Brotherhood, which has been cool to the peace treaty and has close ties with the ruling Hamas militant group in the Gaza Strip. The election is being held in stages and the final outcome won't be known until next year.

Israeli foreign ministry spokesman, Lior Ben Dor, said Israel is not surprised by the Muslim Brotherhood's initial election gains and is convinced the Israel-Egypt peace treaty will remain intact.

"We respect the election results in Egypt. This is the Egyptian people's choice," Ben Dor said.

In a statement on a Hamas website, top Hamas official Moussa Abu Marzouk said that "the Egyptian people have voiced their confidence in the Islamists … We do believe that Egyptian support in the future will be more for our cause."

Herman Cain suspends GOP presidential campaign

Herman Cain has said he is suspending his campaign for the Republican presidential nomination in order to avoid news coverage that is hurtful to his family.

Cain's announcement came five days after a woman claimed she and Cain had an affair for more than a decade, a claim that followed several allegations of sexual harassment against the Georgia businessman. Cain, whose wife, Gloria, stood behind him on the stage, made the announcement to several hundred supporters gathered at what was to have been the opening of his national campaign headquarters.

Cain had performed well in polls until news surfaced in late October that he had been accused of sexual harassment by two women during his time as president of the National Restaurant Association in the 1990s.

Beleaguered Republican presidential candidate Herman Cain, whose effort to win the White House was rocked by claims of infidelity and sexual harrassment, suspended his campaign on Saturday.

Cain, a black former pizza magnate turned hero of the Tea Party right, told a crowd of supporters in his home base of Atlanta, Georgia, that he had made the decision because of the hurt caused to his family and message by allegations he insisted were false.

"As of today, with a lot of prayer and soul searching I am suspending my presidential campaign," Cain told the crowd, who had spent several hours gathered outside a building that was to have opened Saturday as Cain's national campaign headquarters.

Though Cain's popularity was already collapsing, the end of this campaign will likely be a blow to Republican frontrunner Mitt Romney, as Cain's remaining supporters are likely to go to another conservative candidate, such as former congressman Newt Gingrich, and not Romney who has a history of taking more liberal positions he has since disavowed.

Cain strenuously denied allegations of sexual misbehaviour that have been made against him and feverishly reported in the press but said they had deeply hurt his family. "It hurts my wife, it hurts my family, it hurts me and it hurts the American people because you have been denied solutions to our problems," he said.

Cain made the decision after a meeting last night with his wife Gloria; the first time the candidate had met his spouse of 43 years in person since the infidelity allegations had emerged. Gloria Cain joined her husband on the stage as Cain made his announcement, smiling and waving at supporters who chanted her name. Cain repeatedly denied that there was any truth to repeated claims of sexual harassment when he was head of the National Restaurant Association and that he had also conducted a 13-year affair with an Atlanta woman. "I am at peace with my God. I am at peace with my wife and she is at peace with me," he said.

The astonishing scene – not least because Cain effectively ended his presidential bid at a ceremony intended to open a huge new headquarters for it – likely puts a permanent full stop to one of the most unusual campaigns of recent years in America politics. His critics have slammed his bid as little more than a book tour masquerading as a run for the presidency. Cain has certainly spent less time developing the "ground operation" in key early states than some other candidates. But what was not in doubt was the excitement that Cain brought to conservative elements of the Republican base desperate to avoid the nomination of frontrunner Mitt Romney. Cain's radical 9-9-9 tax plan became a national talking point and forced some other candidates to consider flat tax schemes themselves. He also wooed audiences with engaging debate performances, his natural charisma and a gift for comic timing. Cain paid an emotional tribute to his supporters in his Atlanta speech. "Cain supporters are not warm weather supporters and I can't thank all of you enough for what you've done," he said. He also gave a typically barnstorming slam of Washington's political culture, which played into his image as a genuine outsider.

That sort of speech showed why he was able to tap into a deep well of Republican anger at government and surge unexpectedly in the polls throughout October. The flow of support saw Cain become a frontrunner in several key states and national polls, triggering a wave of scrutiny and intense focus from the media.

Cain and his campaign appeared deeply unprepared for their moment in the spotlight. First Cain himself made a series of embarrassing gaffes, including a complete mishandling of a question about Libya in which he appeared to struggle with recognising the North African country. But the most serious problems were accusations that arose from Cain's time as the head of the NRA. Several women came forward in a devastating series of revelations to accuse Cain of acting inappropriately towards them. It culminated last week with the appearance of Ginger White, an Atlanta businesswoman who alleged that she had a long sexual affair with Cain. The candidate denied that, though admitted that he knows White and had helped her financially.

Whatever the veracity of the many allegations now flung at Cain, what is certainly true is that they damaged his chances of ever winning the nomination. Cain's plummet from frontrunner to also-ran was as dramatic as his rise. A swath of professional political pundits slammed the amateurishness of his operation and top conservatives abandoned him for other candidates. His support in Iowa collapsed from 23 percent towards the end of October to just eight percent in one recent survey. During his fiery Atlanta speech Cain finished by saying he would still influence politics in the US by endorsing one of his former rivals and also by the creation of a new online organisation, called Cain Solutions, to promote his beliefs. He also admitted that he had made unspecified mistakes in his conduct. "I have made many mistakes in life. Everybody has. I have made mistakes professionally, personally, as a candidate … and I take responsibility for the mistakes that I have made," he said.

A Description of Hellfire (part 2 of 5)

Its Appearance

Its Location

There is no exact mention from the Quran or the sayings of Prophet Muhammad which pinpoint the location of Hell. No one knows its exact place except God. Due to some linguistic evidence and context of certain hadeeth, some scholars have stated that Hell is in the heavens, yet others say it is in the lower earth.

Its Size

Hell is huge and immensely deep. We know this through several ways.

First, innumerable people will enter Hell, each, as described in a hadeeth, with the molar teeth as large as Uhud (a mountain in Medina)[1] The distance between the shoulders of its inhabitants has also been described as being equivalent to three days of walking.[2] Hell will house all the unbelievers and sinners from the beginning of time and there will still be room for more. God says:

{On the Day when We will say to Hell: ‘Are you filled?’ It will say, ‘Are there any more (to come)?’} [Quran 50:30]

Transliteration: Yawma Naqūlu Lijahannama Hal Amtala'ti Wa Taqūlu Hal Min Mazīdin

The Fire of Hell is likened to a mill that grinds thousands and thousands of tons of grain and then waits for more to come.

Second, a stone thrown from the top of Hell will take a very long time to reach the bottom. One of the companions of the Prophet, may the mercy and blessings of God be upon him, describes how they were sitting with the Prophet and heard the sound of something falling. The Prophet inquired if they knew what it was. When they expressed their lack of knowledge, he said:

That was a stone thrown into Hell seventy years ago and it is yet in the way (the other « side) of Hell until now.» [3]

Another report states:

«If a stone as big as seven pregnant camels was thrown from the edge of Hell, it would fly through it for seventy years, and yet it would not reach the bottom.» [4]

Third, a great many angels will bring Hell on the Day of Resurrection. God speaks of it:

{And Hell will be brought near that Day…} [Quran 89:23]

Transliteration: Wa Jī'a Yawma'idhin Bijahannama

The Prophet said:

«Hell will be brought forth that Day by means of seventy thousand ropes, each of which will be held by seventy thousand angels.» [5]

Fourth, another report that indicates the vast size of Hell is that the sun and moon will be rolled up in Hell on the Day of Resurrection.[6]

Its Levels

Hell has various levels of heat and punishment, each is reserved according to the extent of their disbelief and sins of those being punished. God says:

{Surely, the hypocrites will be in the lowest depths (grade) of the Fire.} [Quran 4:145]

Transliteration: 'Inna Al-Munāfiqīna Fī Ad-Darki Al-'Asfali Mina An-Nāri

The lower the level of Hell, the greater is the intensity of heat. Since the hypocrites will suffer the worst punishment, so will they be in the lowest part of Hell.

God refers to the levels of Hell in the Quran:

{For all will be (ranked) by degrees according to what they did.} [Quran 6:132]

Transliteration: Wa Likullin Darajātun Mimmā `Amilū

{Is one who seeks the good pleasure of God then like the one who draws on himself the wrath of God? His abode is Hell – and worst, indeed, is that destination! They are in varying grades with God, and God is All-Seer of what they do.} [Quran 3:162-163]

Transliteration: 'Afamani Attaba`a Riđwāna Allāhi Kaman Bā'a Bisakhaţin Mina Allāhi Wa Ma'wāhu Jahannamu Wa Bi'sa Al-Maşīru (162) Hum Darajātun `Inda Allāhi Wa Allāhu Başīrun Bimā Ya`malūna

The Gates of Hell

God speaks of seven Gates of Hell in the Quran:

{And surely, Hell is the promised place for them all. It has seven gates, for each of these gates is a class of sinners assigned.} [Quran 15:43-44)]

Transliteration: Wa 'Inna Jahannama Lamaw`iduhum 'Ajma`īna(43) Lahā Sab`atu 'Abwābin Likulli Bābin Minhum Juz'un Maqsūmun

Each gate has an allotted share of the damned who will enter through it. Each will enter according to his deeds and assigned a level of Hell accordingly. When the unbelievers are brought to Hell, its gates will open, they will enter it, and stay in it forever:

{And those who disbelieved will be driven to Hell in groups until, when they reach it, its gates are opened and its keepers will say, ‘Did there not come to you messengers from yourselves, reciting to you the verses of your Lord and warning you of the meeting of this Day of yours?’ They will say, ‘Yes, but the word (meaning the decree) of punishment has come into effect upon the disbelievers.’} [Quran 39:71]

Transliteration: Wa Sīqa Al-Ladhīna Kafarū 'Ilá Jahannama Zumarāan Ĥattá 'Idhā Jā'ūhā Futiĥat 'Abwābuhā Wa Qāla Lahum Khazanatuhā 'Alam Ya'tikum Rusulun Minkum Yatlūna `Alaykum 'Āyāti Rabbikum Wa Yundhirūnakum Liqā'a Yawmikum Hādhā Qālū Balá Wa Lakin Ĥaqqat Kalimatu Al-`Adhābi `Alá Al-Kāfirīna

They will be told after admission:

{Enter the gates of Hell to abide eternally therein, and wretched is the residence of the arrogant.} [Quran 39:72]

Transliteration: Qīla Adkhulū 'Abwāba Jahannama Khālidīna Fīhā Fabi'sa Mathwá Al-Mutakabbirīna

The gates will be shut and there will be no hope of escape as God says:

{But those who reject Our signs, they are the companions of the left hand. On them will be Fire vaulted over (meaning the gates will be locked).[7]} ]Quran 90:19-20[

Transliteration: Wa Al-Ladhīna Kafarū Bi'āyātinā Hum 'Aşĥābu Al-Mash'amahi (19)`Alayhim Nārun Mu'uşadahun

Furthermore, God says in the Quran:

{Woe to every scorner and mocker, who collects wealth and (continuously) counts it. He thinks that his wealth will make him immortal. No! He will surely be thrown into the Crusher. And what can make you know what is the Crushers? It is the fire of God, (eternally) fueled, Which mounts directed at the hearts. Indeed, it (Hellfire) will be closed down upon them in extended columns.} [Quran 104:1-9]

Transliteration: Waylun Likulli Humazatin Lumazahin(1) Al-Ladhī Jama`a Mālāan Wa `Addadahu (2) Yaĥsabu 'Anna Mālahu 'Akhladahu (3) Kallā Layunbadhanna Fī Al-Ĥuţamahi(4)Wa Mā 'Adrāka Mā Al-Ĥuţamahu (5) Nāru Allāhi Al-Mūqadahu (6)Allatī Taţţali`u `Alá Al-'Af'idahi (7) 'Innahā `Alayhim Mu'uşadahun (8) Fī `Amadin Mumaddadahin

The gates of Hell are also closed before the Day of Judgment. The Prophet of Islam spoke of them closing in the month of Ramadan.[8]

Its Fuel

Stones and stubborn unbelievers make the fuel of Hell as God says:

{O you who have believed, protect yourselves and your families from a Fire whose fuel is people and stones...} [Quran 66:6]

Transliteration: Yā 'Ayyuhā Al-Ladhīna 'Āmanū Qū 'Anfusakum Wa 'Ahlīkum Nārāan Waqūduhā An-Nāsu Wa Al-Ĥijāratu...

{…then fear the Fire, whose fuel is men and stones, prepared for the disbelievers.} ]Quran 2:24[

Transliteration: ... Fa Attaqū An-Nāra Allatī Waqūduhā An-Nāsu Wa Al-Ĥijāratu 'U`iddat Lilkāfirīna

Another source of fuel for Hell will be the pagan gods that were worshipped besides God:

{Indeed, you (disbelievers) and what you worship other than God are the firewood of Hell. You will be coming to (enter) it. Had these (false deities) been (actual) gods, they would not have come to it, but all are eternal therein.} [Quran 21:98-99]

Transliteration: 'Innakum Wa Mā Ta`budūna Min Dūni Allāhi Ĥaşabu Jahannama 'Antum Lahā Wa Aridūna (98) Law Kāna Hā'uulā' 'Ālihatan Mā Waradūhā Wa Kullun Fīhā Khālidūna

The Clothing of its Inhabitants

God tells us that the dress of the people of Hell will be garments of fire tailored for them:

{…But those who disbelieved will have cut out for them garments of fire. Poured upon their heads will be scalding water.} [Quran 22:19]

Transliteration: ... Fa-Al-Ladhīna Kafarū Quţţi`at Lahum Thiyābun Min Nārin Yuşabbu Min Fawqi Ru'ūsihimu Al-Ĥamīmu

{And you will see the criminals that Day bound together in shackles, their garments of liquid pitch (melted copper) and their faces covered by the Fire.} [Quran 14:49-50]
