But the SNP leader said the respected financial magazine would “rue the day” it published a map of Scotland renamed as “Skintland”, complete with the capital “Edinborrow” and the “Highinterestlands” in the north.
Other place names to receive the same treatment include Oban (Obankrupt) and Inverness (Inamess), while the headline read: “It’ll cost you – the price of Scottish independence”.
The fuming Scottish First Minister took to the airwaves to claim the tongue-in-cheek puns represent “Unionism boiled down to its essence” and the “sneering condescension” that the ruling class in London displays towards Scotland
But Mr Salmond’s political opponents said he was “manufacturing outrage” to distract attention from an analysis inside the magazine that cast severe doubts on his claims about a separate Scotland’s economy.
Among the issues highlighted in the two-page article were North Sea oil “gradually running dry”, the declining fortunes of Scotland’s financial services industry and a welfare bill that is 11 per cent higher than England’s.
