Mystery as British soldier vanishes from base in Afghanistan

Prime Minister David Cameron today said the disappearance of a British soldier
in Afghanistan was "a very disturbing incident" amid speculation that the
Taliban may have kidnapped him.

The Prime Minister, who was forced to abandon part of his unannounced visit to
Afghanistan due to the search for the serviceman, said: "My thoughts all day
have been with that young man and trying to help the military find him."

An extensive land and air search was launched early this morning after the
soldier went missing from sentry duty in Helmand province.

There were unconfirmed reports that a body had been found.

In one version of events, a Taliban spokesman said the militant group seized
the soldier on Sunday in the Babaji area of southern Helmand and later
executed him.

"The soldier was captured yesterday evening during a firefight. When the
fighting got more intense we couldn't keep him so we had to kill him,"
Qari Mohammad Yousuf told Reuters.
